Vivek Agnihotri, the filmmaker who stunned India with The Kashmir Files, has once again ignited nationwide debate with his latest film — The Bengal Files. While audiences across the country are lauding the film’s brave storytelling, the movie’s release has been marred by controversy, FIRs, and even an unofficial ban in West Bengal.
The Controversy Around Release
From the very first day, The Bengal Files has been surrounded by hostility. Multiple FIRs have been filed against director Vivek Agnihotri, and on the day of release, Kolkata Police shockingly stopped a private screening scheduled inside a hotel auditorium. Adding fuel to the fire, Agnihotri himself has now revealed that West Bengal Police are allegedly threatening cinema and mall owners to block the film’s release. According to him, this is nothing less than a deliberate attempt to hide the truth of the Hindu genocide in Bengal.
What the Film is About
The movie is based on the horrifying genocide of Bengali Hindus during Direct Action Day in 1946, orchestrated by Mohammad Ali Jinnah’s Muslim League. This dark chapter of Indian history saw thousands of innocent Hindus being massacred in Kolkata — a truth often buried in textbooks and political discourse.
Simrat Kaur plays Bhaarti Banerjee, a character inspired by a real survivor and lone witness of the massacre. Her transformation from a smiling, art-loving girl into a traumatized victim of radical violence captures the unimaginable pain and trauma of that era. Pallavi Joshi, as Maa Bhaarti, portrays the older version of her character, and her preparation for embodying a Bengali woman is nothing short of remarkable despite being Punjabi by birth.
Other standout performances include Namashi Chakraborty as Ghulam, an Islamic radical whose chilling role shakes you to the core, Mithun Chakraborty, Puneet Issar, and Darshan Kumar, all adding depth and intensity to the film.
The Bigger Question: Why the Outrage?
The outrage against the movie raises questions — why are anti-Hindu and anti-national elements so offended by a story based on documented history? If the massacre was real, should cinema not serve as a medium to bring these truths to light? For Agnihotri and his wife, producer Pallavi Joshi, the fight is far from over. They have even written an open letter to the President of India, urging intervention to lift the ban in West Bengal.
Box Office Update
Despite the hurdles, The Bengal Files has been showing strong numbers at the box office. Reports suggest that even on Sunday, the film’s earnings grew steadily. However, it still remains far behind the benchmark set by The Kashmir Files.
Final Word
The Bengal Files is not just a film — it’s a mirror to history, a story that every Indian needs to confront. While political resistance and censorship attempts continue, the audience now has a choice: to silence the truth, or to face it head-on.
