The release of Yash Raj Films’ Patahan has sparked intense debate, and not without reason. In an era where spy thrillers are expected to showcase the intelligence and bravery of Indian operatives, Patahan disappoints by reversing the moral compass of its narrative. Shockingly, the film portrays a terror organization akin to the ISI as a “saviour” of India, while the country’s own intelligence agency, RAW, is depicted plotting against its own nation. Scenes involving Indian Air Force personnel in inappropriate attire further dilute the patriotic narrative, reducing soldiers to caricatures and indulging in gratuitous vulgarity.
By contrast, Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar sets a benchmark for responsible and impactful storytelling in the espionage genre. Drawing inspiration from real acts of bravery by Indian intelligence, the film shines a spotlight on the brutal reality of Islamic terrorism and Pakistan’s covert strategies without compromising national pride. Crucially, it avoids sensationalism and unnecessary sexualization, keeping the focus firmly on patriotism, courage, and the sacrifices of India’s security forces.
The difference in these approaches is stark. While Patahan risks alienating viewers by undermining the credibility of India’s intelligence agencies, Dhurandhar reminds us why cinema can be a powerful tool for national pride when handled with sensitivity. By portraying real heroes and exposing threats with integrity, Aditya Dhar has shown that you don’t need vulgarity or misplaced narratives to create a compelling and authentic spy thriller.
In the current climate, Indian cinema must choose responsibility over spectacle.
Dhurandhar proves that patriotism, intelligence, and real-life heroism can be told with both cinematic flair and moral clarity. One hopes future entries in the spy thriller genre will follow this path, giving audiences stories that inspire rather than confuse, and heroes to look up to rather than question.
